Current Schedule and Pricing
Thank you for taking time to view our current offerings. I have done my best to make the program as accessible as possible logistically and financially. With such a wide range of class-types, the schedule can be a but hard to navigate. I’ve done my best to clarify at the bottom of the PDF seen below, but if you have any additional questions or concerns feel free to call or text me.
Also, I have answered some great FAQ’s that can be found here or by scrolling to the bottom of the page.
I am very excited about this summer and look forward to seeing you soon.
Best,
Mr. R-M

SCHEDULE & PRICING FAQ
Are there contracts?
Although you will sign a contract and waiver, there are no long term contracts at Lake Tahoe Karate. We hope to earn your business each month by offering authentic martial arts training.
What are the age groups for your martial arts classes?
Class ages are listed on the bottom of the PDF, and are as follows:
Monkeys: 4-5yrs, Ninjas: 6-8yrs, Youth: 9-12yrs, Teen 13+, and Adult. It is important to know that mentorship programs will cross over these age groups, but the classes are designed as to not intimidate or patronize students by placing them far outside their own age range. This is also done to optimize training duration.
How long is each class session?
Each session is different for each age group: 4-5yrs lasting 30 minutes, 6-8yrs 45 minutes, 9-12yrs and Teens one hour, and Adult lasting an hour and a half. Each age group’s session duration is set to optimize their training based on attention span and their physical needs.
Are there different levels within each age group?
The introductory sessions include beginner students (the first three ranks of white, yellow, and orange belts), with the comprehensive programs including students of all ranks. Beginner students are welcome in any of the programs offered to their age group.
Especially toward the end of the journey to black belt (blue and brown belts), students may be offered special advanced training in addition to their normal programs at no additional cost.
What is the student-to-instructor ratio in each class?
Peter Rulon-Miller is the sole instructor of Lake Tahoe Karate. Each class is capped at an appropriate number to prevent a sacrifice of indivdual attention commensurate with each age group: 4-5yrs: 12 students; 6-8yrs: 16 students; and 9-12yrs, Teens, and Adults at 20 students.
Can my child attend more than one class per week?
Yes! Everyone has different needs, but 2 or more sessions a week is encouraged for all students. Consistent spaced repetition is important for skill acquisition, memory, fitness and conditioning- for optimal improvement in all areas of martial arts training.
Are there trial classes available for new students?
Not exactly. Our free 1-on-1 introductory sessions are mandatory for all incoming students to introduce them to martial arts technique and etiquette, and to assess the student to place them into the right program. Although you may sit in on a class to observe, there are no “trial classes.” To participate in a class, you must register. Intro sessions can be reserved by calling or texting Peter at 775 835-2154.
Do you offer family discounts?
This has not been determined yet. As this is a new program we are learning where we can and cannot allow discounts. If you have financial concerns about the cost with multiple family member, please do not hesitate to discuss your situation with Peter.
What are the payment options and terms?
All programs are monthly, and billed automatically on the 5th of the month. You may enter any program at any time, and we will prorate your monthly membership rate and charge you for your first full month. If you’d like to pay for more than the prorated amount and the first month, you may do so. However there must be an automatic payment authorization on a valid credit or debit card.
Is there a registration fee for new students?
Yes. Each program start requires a registration fee ($80), purchase of a discounted uniform ($40), and sales tax ($3.31), totaling $123.31. Boxing gloves and hand wraps
Can I pick any classes?
You will want to select classes based on your age group, and consider your needs and goals to choose the right program. Please remember there are many age groups with more than one option for classes-per-week. Please understand we have tailored curriculum for each session to be treated in relation to the last session and the next session for that program. For both this reason and to encourage bonding between students, we ask that you choose classes that you will be able to stick to.
If you choose the 1x or 2x option for any program, please understand you cannot switch back and forth to different days, but must keep to the weekday and time that works best for you. Likewise, the 4x programs must keep to the days and times marked “4x,” and should not plan to attend other class times.
Do you offer refunds or credits for missed classes?
If you miss a class, you will receive credit in the form of a make-up class that will be available the first week of every month on Saturday afternoons. Please do your best to choose a schedule you can attend consistently to ensure you are getting a proper balance of specialization.
What happens if a class is canceled by the school?
We will only close for the 4th of July, and the weeks of Christmas and New Years Eve. Occasionally classes must be cancelled due to emergencies. In addition to the offering of make-up and occasional seminars with no extra charge, it is important to understand the monthly membership dues and classes per month are calculated based on a standard of a 4-week month. This approach results in an excess of approximately 4 weeks over the course of a year. This excess accounts for closures during major holidays such as Thanksgiving Day, and the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, as well as any occasional emergency closures.
Are there special classes during school holidays and breaks?
We will offer camps, seminars, “parents’ night out,” and other special events for our members based around holidays, seasonal ebb and flow of the town, and school breaks. We encourage you to stay communicative with your needs in this regard.
How often does the schedule change?
We do our best to keep the schedule as consistent as possible. The primary classes listed in the PDF above should remain as close to their current form now as possible years from now.
Special classes and camps will be announced through email and text for current members,
What is the process for advancing to a higher level or belt?
Tests are held on a quarterly basis on Saturdays, with no testing for our 4-5yrs age group, who will receive in-class awards for life skills. Older students will be tested on various criteria they will learn in their regular classes and are made well aware of the standards they must meet to achieve their next rank, with their instructor ensuring they are progressing accordingly.
Are there additional costs for belt testing or advancement ceremonies?
Students register for their test with no testing fees until they are ready to test for black belt (a blog post on this will be posted very soon). The long story short is that we want no indication that you are “paying for your belt.” The exception to paying for tests is black belt testing, where we have found that the “Endowment Effect” has its rightful place.
Do you offer private lessons?
Although I invest most of my time and energy into our primary programs listed in the PDF, I do offer private lessons. I urge students to attend the primary programs to get the most out of their training. There are many trade-offs between taking a class with a group of peers, and a one-on-one session with an instructor, and I suggest the best value is nearly always in class with your peers. However, If the need is clear, I will accept students for private lessons.
